After the stormy weather yesterday, we weren’t sure if the swell would be too much to go out in today. There were still small waves breaking on the beach in the harbour, but we could see the town on the other side! For the first time in 4 days there was no haar (fog). Even with a little swell we knew we’d need to make the most of the good visibility.

As we left the harbour, we noticed a supply vessel, exactly on our waypoint. As if it knew we were coming, it hoisted it’s anchor and headed off. What luck!

Today was one of the windiest we’ve set out in all trip. Both Stew and I were on 9m kites, the smallest kites we’ve used all trip, and only the second time Stew’s had to use the 9m. As kiters we made good progress, mainly on one tack, upwind towards the wind farm outside Aberdeen, then dodging the supply vessels congregated outside. Mentor however had a harder time. It was very rolly as they pounded their way through the waves trying their best to keep up with us. As we approached Stonehaven we had the option to keep going, but by this time the crew were well shaken, and ready for a break. Even Jeremy admitted he felt a little seasick today, first time all trip.

Dunnottar Castle lies 2miles south of Stonehaven, a ruined medieval fortress atop a rocky headland surrounded on all sides by steep cliffs, it is straight out of a story books, and it has a history to match. After the crowning of Charles II in 1651, it was too dangerous to return the Honours of Scotland – the oldest set of crown jewels in the UK – to their usual home in Edingburgh, so they were instead brought here to protect them against the invading Oliver Cromwell. With the castle surrounded the resourceful wives of the castle were able to sneak the crown, sword and sceptre out either in a bundle of wool or in a cart of seeweed – depending on which story you believe.
