Where did it start?

I have always loved the outdoors and anything involving water. I started over 25 years ago sailing and canoeing with the scouts and have never looked back. I started kitesurfing 14 years ago in Greece, and foiling a year ago. Foiling really made this challenge possible as before I was useless going upwind on my twin tip.

What do you love about kitesurfing?

It’s always evolving. When we started, kitesurfing was a light wind activity until it got windy enough for windsurfing. That soon changed with advances in kite design and before long I rarely ever windsurfed again. From riding a twin tip doing tricks in flat water, to riding a surfboard in waves ( I no longer paddle to catch a wave! ) to foiling, there is always something new to learn, and an option for almost every weather/water condition.

What excites you about this challenge?

This will be the biggest adventure by far. Anyone who knows the British coastline, with its huge tides and currents, rocky headlands and shore breaks, will understand the challenges. It will involve day by day passage planning, looking at the wind and tides, and locating safe landing spots. The biggest variable will be the wind, so kite size choice will be key as we will not be able to change so easily once we have set off for the day. I imagine perfect days when we can achieve 50 miles in only a few hours, to frustrating ones when we don’t get off the beach. It is all part of the challenge and adventure.
