How did you get into Kiting?

I first got introduced to kiting in Greece, while I was at Windwind for my summer break. On our one free day a week, our friend Pasty (of Pasty Adventures) would go to North Beach kiting. Having never seen it before I was keen to see how it was done. The atmosphere on the beach there, was the same as any of the other kite beaches I’ve been to, alive with people swapping stories, experiences, launching and landing kites and watching out for cool new tricks out on the water. (Which back then was a handle pass).

What do you like most about kiting?

I love that no two sessions are the same, whether its the wind or your mental state, there is always something to occupy you. I especially like the days where its windy and you’re on a small kite. For me the dream is flat water, then you’re not looking for the next wave to time your next trick, you can just think about your body position the kite and any mental preparation.

What about those trying to get into foiling?

In some ways it is going back to the beginning again. I haven’t crashed my kite so often in a long time. But in other ways, its just like learning the next trick, once you’ve got it you’re hooked. The thing I find the hardest, is turning the board around. With a twin tip you get lazy and as long as you can touch some part of the board, you can usually manoeuvre it to the correct place. With the foil theres so much under the water you need a firm hand hold, and it will only go “forwards”.
