Last night we looked up when sunrise was. There’s sunrise – when the sun appears on the horizon, and then there’s three different twilights: Astronomical, Nautical and Civil. We just needed enough light so that we could spot the fishing pots before they accidentally got caught around our propeller. So we set our alarms for 04:30 and departed at nautical twilight back to our start point.
We made good progress, but the wind died just as we were about to cross the Humber. We could see the finish, but couldn’t quite make it. Another early start tomorrow in hopes of making it then.
Bridlington – Lobster capital of Europe
Not very surprising that we were stuggling to avoid all the fishing pots, we’d stopped just outside Bridlington – the lobster capital of Europe, landing over 539 tonnes in 2018 – more than anywhere else on the entire continent.
Lobsters commanded the highest average price of all species landed by the UK fleet, at £14.50 per kilogram. They accounted for only two per cent of the weight of shellfish landings, but 12 per cent of the value. Which is why Bridlington, which lands almost no actual fish, is Yorkshire’s most lucrative fishing port.
