The forecast for today was not good, showing 5-6 knots all day. So we turned off our alarm clocks and treating ourselves to a long lie in (it is Saturday after all), and a full Irish fried breakfast. The around Ireland regatta was setting off at 14:00 further north in Wicklow, so we thought we’d head out and watch the start.

By the time we reached yesterday’s finish point we realised there was enough wind to kite, so we quickly got ready and set out. Unlike yesterday we were on the correct kites for the conditions and felt as if we were flying along. Sadly the tide was against us and increasing strength. So although we were making good speed through the water, across the land our progress was slow. Eventually by Wicklow Head lighthouse the current had become so strong we started going backwards, so had to abandon for the day. Yesterday we did 5.5 nm in the same time we did 8.9nm today, however yesterday we were with the tide. So yesterday, even with two kite changes, meaning at least 30 minutes of dead time each, we were probably more efficient for the energy we used. Still, was worth it for views of the yachts all with their multi-coloured spinnakers up. The leaders were flying along, after a down-wind, down-tide start. We were careful not to get in the way, staying inshore until they’d passed us. Before no time they were mere specks on the horizon. The winning time is about 38 hours, so who knows, we may see some of them again very soon.

The first round ireland race, held in 1980 consisted of only 16 boats, the race, held biannually, has 64 entrants this year. The record for the fastest mono-hull to complete the 704-mile course is held by George David in Rambler 88 who completed the course in 50 hours 24 minutes and 9 seconds in 2016. In contrast, thats approximately the same distance from Cleethorpse, where we started our trip, to Skomer, which if you exclude all our breaks took us 104 hours.
