Bright (or at least for the first part) and early we headed down to Chesil Beach for Stew’s impromptu beach clean. It was great meeting Matt who had seen us on Facebook and joined us before his gym session, warming up his calves as we traipsed across the beach’s steep pebbly surface.
We started off heading towards Portland, but this must be a popular walking route for residents as we found almost nothing. Feeling relieved there was so little rubbish on the beach, but slightly mis-sold on the amount to expect we turned around and headed in the opposite direction, where Stew had been the previous day. Chesil beach stretches 18 miles down the coast towards West Bay. Besides the car park where we started there are very few accesses, and hence not much foot traffic. Winter storms regularly hit this stretch and we soon started finding lots of small items such as bottle tops, broken pieces of containers and rope all tangled in the seaweed.
