Wow, yesterday was sunny with sunbathers lounging on their deck chairs and people meandering down the beach. Today grey, drizzly, and high tide. Yesterday the waves had seemed a small obstacle on the way out, today it felt like a wall of white. We’d done a quick U-turn on the way down to get the twin tips, just in case. But I know we can do it with them, its the foils we’re trying to master.

Stew ventured out first,  with the wind almost directly onshore he seemed to be going more along the beach than out through the waves. But still, out I followed. Ten minutes later, we’d both ditched our kites in the surf and were clambering back up the beach with our tails between our legs. Not to be deterred, we then played a game of he-goes she-goes, taking turns to brave the waves, while the other watched encouragingly for a break in waves.

Finally we found a technique, if you could get deep enough that you could put your board on your feet, then you could drag side ways like this. And use the depth a wave generated to get up and out. I’m not sure if it was our technique which improved, or the dropping tide causing the waves to shrink. But we both got out, first me on the 8m as the wind had dropped, then Stew on the 6m (just to prove he could do it, before going back in for the 12m).

After fighting for more than an hour to get out, it felt good to finally be riding. Gybes were working today and had just the right amount of power to enjoy chasing the rollers on the downwinder.

Just as we were getting tired two helicopters started circling really close and low. We noticed on the shore there were a number of sirens. On the 3rd buzz-by, Stew and I headed in. I’d ditched my kite about 20 minutes earlier and struggled to get up, not sure if someone had called in, but as soon as we were on the beach the fire truck, ambulance and two choppers disappeared. Don’t think it was for us, as they’d have come over to talk to us, but was odd none the less.
