After such an early morning yesterday, today’s 10:30 start felt like complete luxury. So was a day on land exploring how to make gin at Salcombe Gin Co. We split into two teams, team Mactaggart (Jeremy and Islay’s family name) and team Wirral (where Joe and Stew grew up). Each group got to choose which ingredients to add to their own bottle of gin. With out conferring, we each naturally went for completely different styles, Stew and Joe choosing to go more for the “Dark and Stormy” focusing on spices like ginger, nutmeg and lime. While Jeremy and Islay went for the lighter/sweeter choices of elder berries, strawberries and orange. With more than 100 different spices, flowers and flavourings to choose, having the chance to smell all the small jars was an education in itself. In the evening we were excited to be welcomed back to give a talk about our adventure. And even more delighted to have a big group from Bantham surf club come join us.
